KTA Entry.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
University of Massachusetts Amherst sophomore Amanda O'Keefe tackles her weekend homework on Saturday, March 6 in her room at the Iota Gamma Upsilon sorority. She stays motivated by competing with her twin sister and a friend in a "GPA war," she said. "Laziness is the only reason people fail at getting decent grades in [the sorority] house, so I avoid it," she said. O'Keefe is the scholarship chairperson in the sorority. Her job is to monitor the sisters' grade point averages and enforce mandatory study hours several times a week.

Documentary stuffs.

For the final documentary project I will be photographing local punks and punk bands. There's a change (albeit a kind of small one) that I narrow this down further to local straightedge punks. I'd like to show what "punk" looks like and how that has changed since it blew up in the 1970s. People these days who identify as punk don't always fit the mold as far as personal style and attitude goes. My photos and interviews will reflect that change.

More specifically, I'd like to shoot individuals, bands, couples, friends and people who identify as different subsects of punk (straightedge, crust, etc).

The sources I have gathered so far will undoubtedly show the visible differences between early punks and modern punks.

1. Leon Pierce is 30 and has been playing music for years. He is one of two people who are mentors in the DIY UMass club, which puts on local punk shows, most often for free, to make the music more accessible to the locals.

2. Anne Macon is a friend of Leon and the club's other mentor. The two of them don't dress like the stereotypical punk (leather and studs), but have the ideals and some of the attitude. Basically, if you passed them on the street, you'd have no idea, but if you talked to them you would. They're close friends so I will probably shoot them together as well as individually.

3. Hogfather. His real name is Cory. He's in high school (I think he's a junior) and is in a punk band and looks everything like an original punk. Being in high school he has all of the zest and spirit for the music.

I'd like my photos to have qualities from a couple different photographers, specifically Andy Warhol, Joelle Andres, and Jolie (not sure of her last name because it's hiding behind her Facebook page, which is called .iam.jolie.photography.). Warhol's photos are very raw, while Joelle's are bright and clean, and Jolie's are beautifully composed and capture New York punks in the most normal situations. Each photographer shoots (or shot) my general subject matter.
